Abstract

  • Background

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) remains a primary global contributor to chronic morbidity and mortality, underscoring the critical need for preventive dietary strategies. Accumulating nutritional and epidemiological paradigms highlight the health-promoting properties of specific vegetable subclasses—particularly green leafy and cruciferous vegetables—which are exceptionally rich in bioactive phytochemicals, dietary nitrates, carotenoids, folate, potassium, and diverse polyphenolic antioxidants. These vital micronutrients act synergistically to improve vascular endothelial function, attenuate systemic inflammation, suppress oxidative stress, and optimize lipid profiles. This systematic review and meta-analysis was conducted to rigorously quantify the protective association between habitual consumption of green leafy vegetables (inclusive of cruciferous varieties) and the incidence of cardiovascular disease.

  • Methods

To address whether green leafy and cruciferous vegetable consumption significantly reduces CVD incidence, a comprehensive systematic literature search was executed to identify global studies evaluating this association. Methodological approaches employed rigorous meta-analytic statistical techniques. All calculations incorporated the determination of relative risk (RR) effect sizes alongside their respective 95% confidence intervals (CIs), inter-study heterogeneity metrics, relative statistical weights for each included study, and individual significance ($P$) values using a random-effects model.

  • Results

A total of eight prospective studies meeting strict inclusion criteria investigated the relationship between total cardiovascular disease incidence and the intake of green leafy vegetables. Quantitative meta-analytic synthesis utilizing a random-effects model revealed an overall pooled effect size of $\text{RR} = 0.842$ (95% CI: $0.753$ to $0.941$, $P = 0.002$). This statistically significant finding indicates a robust 15.8% reduction in the incidence of cardiovascular disease associated with higher consumption tiers of green leafy and cruciferous vegetables.

  • Conclusions

Habitual dietary intake of green leafy and cruciferous vegetables confers a statistically significant and clinically meaningful protective effect against cardiovascular disease. These meta-analytic findings reinforce evidence-based nutritional guidelines advocating for the regular daily inclusion of these vegetable subclasses in primary cardiovascular disease prevention.
