Abstract
- Background
While traditional systems of medicine have long celebrated the guava (Psidium guajava L.) for its multifaceted healing properties, modern clinical investigations are increasingly validating its therapeutic applications. Rich in bioactive phytochemicals—including flavonoids, carotenoids, and an exceptionally high concentration of vitamin C—different anatomical components of the guava plant exhibit robust pharmacological activities. This review was conducted to comprehensively examine and synthesize the growing body of human clinical evidence regarding guava’s therapeutic efficacy across multiple diverse health domains, highlighting its potential as a sustainable, food-based intervention for global health management.
- Methods
A structured literature evaluation was performed to analyze peer-reviewed human clinical trials, randomized controlled trials (RCTs), and targeted nutritional intervention studies evaluating standardized guava fruit preparations, leaf extracts, and juice formulations. Data extraction focused on identifying primary physiological endpoints, metabolic outcomes, therapeutic mechanisms, and safety profiles associated with guava supplementation in human cohorts.
- Results
Synthesized findings from randomized controlled trials demonstrate that guava interventions yield significant clinical benefits across a broad spectrum of physiological sectors:
Metabolic & Cardiovascular Health: Guava consumption significantly reduces postprandial glycemic and glucose responses, optimizes lipid profiles, and contributes to the reduction of systemic blood pressure.
Nutritional Interventions: Clinical nutritional studies establish guava as an exceptionally effective, food-based strategy for improving iron status and mitigating anemia in vulnerable populations—such as young children and pregnant women—primarily driven by enhanced non-heme iron absorption facilitated by its high vitamin C content.
Musculoskeletal & Dermatological Care: Evidence highlights guava's efficacy in alleviating joint and knee pain, alongside topical dermatological applications demonstrating successful sebum and oil production control.
Oral & Gastrointestinal Health: Clinical evaluations validate guava-based formulations in preventing gingivitis, reducing oral pathogenic bacteria, and traditional applications in alleviating acute diarrheal symptoms. The reviewed interventions consistently demonstrated an excellent safety and tolerability profile.
- Conclusions
Guava (Psidium guajava L.) emerges from contemporary clinical research as a scientifically validated therapeutic and nutritional agent capable of significantly improving health outcomes across diverse populations and medical conditions. While current evidence provides a robust foundation for its clinical utility, future research should focus on further elucidating exact molecular mechanisms of action, optimizing standardized preparation dosages, and exploring broader therapeutic applications.
