Abstract
- Background
Chlorella is a genus of green unicellular microalgae commercially produced and distributed globally as a nutrient-dense dietary supplement. Unlike standard plant-derived foods, Chlorella products contain unique profiles of essential nutrients and vitamins, including vitamins D and B12, alongside exceptionally high concentrations of folate and iron. Accumulating evidence indicates that Chlorella supplementation exerts diverse pharmacological activities in mammals, including immunomodulatory, antioxidant, antidiabetic, antihypertensive, and antihyperlipidemic effects. Furthermore, meta-analytic evaluations of cardiovascular risk factors suggest that Chlorella intake improves total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, systolic and diastolic blood pressure, and fasting blood glucose levels, although triglyceride and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels remain largely unaffected. These health benefits are widely attributed to synergistic interactions among its multifaceted nutrient and antioxidant compounds, highlighting the need for continued exploration of its bioactive constituents.

A comprehensive review of scientific literature was conducted to synthesize current evidence regarding the nutritional composition, pharmacological activities, and clinical impacts of Chlorella supplementation. Data concerning its biochemical profile, micronutrient abundance, and metabolic outcomes—including lipid parameters, glycemic control, and blood pressure regulation—were systematically examined and evaluated.

Current findings underscore the exceptional nutritional value and therapeutic potential of Chlorella. Its unique abundance of vital vitamins, minerals, and bioactive phytochemicals positions it as a superior functional food compared to conventional plant sources. Clinical and meta-analytic data confirm its efficacy in ameliorating key cardiovascular and metabolic risk factors, supporting its role in holistic health management. However, comprehensive identification and characterization of all individual bioactive compounds responsible for these synergistic effects remain constrained by limited molecular data.
- Conclusions
Chlorella is a highly nutritious and biologically active microalga offering robust pharmacological benefits, including cardiovascular and metabolic support. While its multi-nutrient synergy drives impressive health-promoting outcomes, further research is warranted to fully isolate and characterize its specific bioactive compounds.
