Abstract
- Background
Metabolic syndrome encompasses a cluster of interconnected physiological risk factors that significantly elevate the incidence of cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes mellitus. Preclinical and in vitro investigations indicate that reducing systemic reactive oxygen species can help normalize the metabolic pathways underlying this syndrome. The açaí palm (Euterpe oleracea Mart.), native to South America, produces a small purple-black fruit that has gained widespread popularity as a functional food due to its exceptional antioxidant potential. While previous laboratory and animal studies have demonstrated favorable antioxidant outcomes, clinical human data evaluating its systemic health benefits remain limited. This open-label pilot study was designed to evaluate the physiological and metabolic impact of açai fruit pulp consumption on key risk factors associated with metabolic disorders in an overweight human population.
- Methods
A single-arm, open-label pilot study was conducted involving 10 overweight adult participants with a body mass index (BMI) ranging between 25 and 30 kg/m$^2$. Subjects consumed 100 g of fresh-frozen açai fruit pulp twice daily for a duration of one consecutive month. Primary study endpoints included fasting plasma glucose, serum insulin, lipid profiles (total cholesterol, LDL-C, HDL-C, and triglycerides), exhaled nitric oxide metabolites (eNO), and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) levels. Additionally, post-prandial metabolic responses—including blood glucose, blood pressure, and eNO fluctuations following a standardized test meal—were evaluated at baseline and after 30 days of daily açai supplementation.
- Results
Following the 30-day intervention, participants exhibited statistically significant reductions in both fasting plasma glucose and serum insulin levels compared to baseline values (both $P < 0.02$). Total cholesterol levels also showed a significant decrease ($P = 0.03$), accompanied by borderline significant reductions in LDL-cholesterol concentrations and the total-to-HDL cholesterol ratio (both $P = 0.051$). Furthermore, daily consumption of açai pulp significantly ameliorated the post-prandial glycemic response following the standardized meal, quantified as a marked reduction in the incremental area under the curve ($P = 0.047$). However, the intervention produced no significant alterations in systemic blood pressure, hs-CRP, or exhaled nitric oxide metabolites.
- Conclusions
Daily dietary consumption of açai fruit pulp effectively reduces several key biochemical markers of metabolic disease risk—including fasting glucose, insulin, and total cholesterol—in overweight adults. These promising findings from an uncontrolled pilot trial indicate that further robust, randomized controlled trials are warranted to confirm its therapeutic efficacy in metabolic syndrome management.
